The Daily Mail by Radiohead

Radiohead are a long time favourite of mine. I lost many hours trying to get copies of b-sides and rarities on Limewire. And yet somehow – I’d missed this this release from the King of Limbs: Live from the basement recordings (and later released single.

In fact I had no awareness of it at all until we were watching Ozark and this track caught my ear. It was clearly Thom Yorke but it took me researching it to find out it was a Radiohead track I hadn’t heard before.

The impact of the song was hugely amplified by the way it was used in this scene (thankfully pretty spoiler-free if you’re worried about it). The visual action is matched with the tempo and tone shifts within the song – it’s quite powerful.

The song itself is a bit of a banger! It starts sedate and a little mournful – very piano driven. But by the time the song is done – it’s a rollicking, rolling tune that feels like it wants to keep on going, even as it finishes. In many ways it reminds of You and Whose Army.
