Liam Finn may now be a full-time member of Crowded House with his dad and brother – but twenty-something years ago he was a young upstart in the fantastic band Betchadupa.

There’s a lot to be said for genetics and natural talent. Even at this young age, Finn knew how to write catchy songs. Drop D is one of their more frantic and frenetic songs – but the combination of the melody, energy, and his distinctive voice make it still incredibly catchy.

I was lucky enough to see them live in 2004 and this song was an utter highlight.

Between Betchadupa and Crowded House – Liam has also had some fantastic solo albums – often heavily focused on looping instruments live. He’s a fantastic multi-instrumentalist and this video shows the energy he brings to a room.

Again – I was lucky enough to see him perform solo (this time in Christchurch in 2008) and he’d be a ‘must see’ if he ever tours Australia again.
